One of the hardest things to let go of is not a person, a deal, or even a mistake. It is an old version of yourself.

The version that used to be sharper. The version that used to prospect every day. The version that had more energy, more confidence, more discipline, or more momentum. The version you keep comparing yourself to.

That comparison can quietly become a trap. You tell yourself, I used to be better than this. I used to be more focused. I used to be more consistent. I used to have more drive.

And before long, instead of using the past as evidence of what you are capable of, you use it as evidence that something has gone wrong. That is when the past stops helping you and starts controlling you.

This matters for Realtors because our business is full of seasons. There are seasons when everything feels easy. Listings come in. Buyers call. Referrals happen. Prospecting feels natural. Confidence is high.

Then life changes. The market changes. Your schedule changes. Your family changes. Your energy changes. Your responsibilities change. And suddenly the system that worked five years ago does not fit the life you are living now.

The mistake is trying to force yourself back into the person you were instead of building the structure the person you are today actually needs. That is not lowering your standards. It is getting honest about reality.

Take Back Control is not about returning to some perfect version of yourself from the past. It is about reclaiming the parts that still matter and rebuilding your execution around the life you have now.

Keep the standard. Keep the work ethic. Keep the experience. Keep the values. But let go of the methods that no longer fit.

Maybe you used to make fifty cold calls every morning and now that schedule is unrealistic. Fine. The question is not whether you can recreate the old routine. The question is what structure will reliably create the result now.

Maybe the answer is a protected thirty-minute prospecting block. Maybe it is ten high-value follow-up calls before noon. Maybe it is a rule that says revenue activity happens before email. Maybe it is simplifying your database so you can actually use it consistently.

The point is not to preserve the old system. The point is to preserve execution.

There is another side to this too. Sometimes who you were is exactly what is keeping you stuck.

Maybe you were the person who said yes to everyone. Maybe you were the person who worked late every night. Maybe you were the person who handled everything personally because you did not trust anyone else to do it. Maybe you were the person who could survive chaos because adrenaline kept you moving.

That version of you may have helped build your business. It does not mean that version should run the next stage of your life.

Growth often requires a strange kind of loyalty shift. You stop being loyal to the habits that got you here and start being loyal to the standards that will take you forward. That distinction matters.

Your habits are not your identity. Your routines are not your identity. Even your past performance is not your identity. Your identity is built by what you repeatedly prove through action now.

That is why I do not think the goal is to become someone completely different. The goal is to become more deliberate about who you are choosing to be.

You do that with evidence. You keep one commitment today. You finish one thing you have been avoiding. You protect one priority. You follow through when you do not feel like it.

Those small actions are not insignificant. They are proof. Proof that you are not trapped by your past. Proof that you can update the way you operate. Proof that you can become more reliable without becoming more complicated.

So here is the question I would ask you. What part of your old identity are you still trying to protect even though it no longer serves you? And what standard underneath it is actually worth keeping?

Separate the two. Keep the standard. Change the structure. Then take one action today that matches the person you are becoming.

Not someday. Today. Because you do not become the next version of yourself by thinking about it. You become that person by creating evidence.
